The following information was pulled from the HARTFORD/HERALD NEWSPAPER on microfilm for the year 1886.    Items found: births, deaths and marriages plus sorted notes of interest.    My special thanks to the great lady in Texas, who loaned me this tape for this project, the total information found is pure gold.

Mr. JOHN H. LEACH CALLED ON US Monday. Mr. Leach a native of Ohio co.  and once lived a short time in Hartford. He left the county in 1845 an never returned until 1885 being absent just 40 years... Nothing appeared natural to him on  his return. He did not recognize his own brothers nor did they recognize him.  Mr. Leach steamboated for many years after leaving here and in 1854 he went to California and engaged in gold mining and other things. He has saved up enough to do him the rest of his days. Ladies he is a bachelor yet.... a hint to the wise...

George R. Erwin and Miss Chapman, the run away couple from Calhoun, Ky were married in the parlors of the Occidental Hotel Tuesday.

NICHOLAS HUDSON shot and killed STEPHEN ELLIS in a drunken row in Rockport, Ind. on the night of Jan. 30.

MR. JAMES ASHLEY moved to MAGAN, OHIO to operate in the grocery trade.

ED OLDHAM of Caneyville was walking up the railroad rack, just above the tunnel, between Rosine and Horse Branch last Tuesday and run upon by the East bound train and wounded so badly that he died soon after. He was hard of hearing.

29 JAN.    About 4 miles north of FORDSVILLE, Mrs. SARAH ANN MARLOW wife of  JOSIAH M. MARLOW died of consumption. She was born in NELSON CO. KY. JAN 5, 1845 and was daughter of ELISS and MARY J. WALKER who came to OHIO CO on MARCH 11, 1864 ...She was married April 25, 1866... On the 30th she was buried on the JOHN MILES FARM. She leaves her husband and six children, five sons and one daughter.

JIM BENNETT son of DR. W. P. BENNETT  age 2 1/2 years, went into a room  by himself climbed on a chair, reached a phial of carbolic acid from the mantel and drank some of it's contents.  His mother hearing his cry and hurried to his aid, medical aid was summoned but all to no purpose. He passed away on the 13th 21 hours after the accident.

We understand that our friend Prof. W. C. Gaynor was clandestinely married to Miss Bessie Ferguson of South Carrollton, at Clarksville, Tenn. last week.   Gaynor was born in Hancock Co. and Miss Ferguson of South Carrollton.

26 APRIL , HENRY L. MILAM died at the cutoff of Breckinridge Co. of Typhoid Fever in his 28th  year. Logan as he was called was born in Breckinridge Co. to HENRY & MARGARET MILAM.. OCT. 29,  1882;  he married MISS MARY DAHON, daughter of ALLEN and Julia Dalton.... He leaves a wife and a  son and a daughter.  On the morning of the 30th his remains were buried in the family cem. on his father in-laws farm, Allen Dalton.

Bean to an old citizen of OHIO CO.  “FATHER” as he was familiarly called. Thomas Taylor. I now write you concerning him. He died on the 14th of this month at the home of his daughter,

Mrs. H. F. Rockwell at Elma, Chehalis Co. Washington Territory at the ripe age 91 years 7 months 2 days. I send this item knowing that a good number of his family connections as well as old comrades will see it. He leaves a wife, two children, one a son and many friend to mourn his loss but we grieve not as those without hope...

BURCH.   Her father died on APRIL 6 1885..  She was married November 20, 1867. She leaves husband and two daughters. She was buried beside her father in the GODSEY CEM. on the ELLAS WALKER FARM

The soldiers in the Front.... Not asking Favors, but Demanding Their Rights

 A meeting of the soldiers of the late war, residing in Ohio county, was held at the courthouse in Hartford, Ky on Friday, the 11th day of June 1886. On motion, Hon. Sam E. Hill was called to the chair, who in a few well chosen remarks stated the object of the meeting which was to take into consideration and to urge our representatives in congress to vote for the Pension Bill, which has passed the Senate and which is now pending in the House.    On motion, Sam K. Cox was elected Secretary.  The Chairman, S. E. Hill upon motion appointed the following committee on resolutions, via; E. C. HUBBARD, WOOD TINSLEY, ED JACKSON, THOMAS GREER, and COL. Q. C. SHANKS.

  While the committee was absent, a motion was made and adopted that those present enroll their names and to facilitate the enrolment.  Dr. L. T. COX, H. C. TRUMAN, and  JOHN C. CHAMBERLAIN were appointed assistant Secretaries, The following is a list of those present.

MRS. CINDERELIA PARSONS committed suicide at the home of her mother MRS. ASHLEY by use of MORPHINE... while no note was found, the following was put forth as reasons... Last September she married Mr. James Parson, a former resident of Ohio Co. and the union proved to be far from happy...  the  couple separated last December....  she tried to take her life  then... but this time she completed it...  she was 19 years of age.

Monday morning..... John W. Fulkerson was shot today  with a shot gun during a fight with his brothers FRANK and MARCELLUS he was hit in the arm and stomach... not known if the wounds were fatal or not.

IGNATIUS PIGMAN STATLER was born in Ohio Co. Ky. November 20, 1803  and died August 12, 1886 in sight of where he was born.  Twelve children were born to him, 9 of which lived to be grown. There are 7 still living.  He was grandfather of 26 , 18 of whom still live. He was honorable in his dealing, noted for his veracity, industrious and economical and celebrated for his warmhearted hospitality. He had the respect and esteem of all who knew him.

Miss Mary T. Iler, daughter of THOMAS ILER, OF PINCHECOE, after a long and painful illness, died last Tuesday at the home of her grandfather Wm. Iler of Halls Cree, where she had gone on a visit.  This is the 4th death among his children and step-children in less than twelve months.  They most certainly have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad loss.

21 SEPTEMBER   MR. FRED  S. GRIFFIN age 28, died at the family home in HARTFORD... he was the youngest son of PROF. FRANK GRIFFIN and MARTHA TYLERR GRIFFIN his wife and since the death of his eldest brother Dr. TYLERR GRIFFIN the protection and support of the family have devolved upon him and right nobly did he discharge his duty by rendering to his invalid  mother, the most unselfish service of filial devotion.  After MRS GRIFFIN’S DEATH WHICH OCCURED SOME TWO YEARS AGO, FRED CONSECRATED HIS LIFE TO THE SERVICE of his two sisters, MISS EVA AND MISS ANNIE to whom he was devotedly attached and both

of whom reciprocated his love in the most unstinted measure and ministered to his wants during his last illness with all the watchful care and tireless energy characteristic of woman’s love. But sisters

MRS. MARY ANN MOSELY, died at her home in HENDERSON CO. ON THE 23TH of FLUX. She was buried in the Bethel cem. near HIBBARDSVILLE.  After the burier MR. MOSELY left with the remains of his family, two children to reside permanently in OHIO CO.  and took passage on a Green River packet  for Rockport. An infant son, 6 months old, which was sick at the time of starting died of Flux  on the landing of the boat at Rockport, on the 28th. He was buried in the Bethel cem. near Horton

Sister MARTHA H. HUNTER, wife of  WM. HUNTER , died  at her home near Small House, Ohio Co. Ky  Oct. 25th, 1886. She was born in Muhlenberg Co. Ky in 1828. Was converted to the ministry of  Rev. R. B. McCOWN in 1862 or 3 and joined the M. E. CHURCH SOUTH; here she lived a consistent member, until removed to the triumphant.

This estimable lady was a devoted wife, a loving mother , a true neighbor and will be greatly missed by the community in which she lived...

Near Pattieaville, in this county at 6 o’clock a. m.  Sunday October 17, 1886 of consumption, Mrs. Amanda A. Muffett, wife of DUDLEY MUFFETT in the 27th year of age. She was born in what is now known as the Cut-off in Breckenridge county January 18, 1859 and was daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth Overton.  Sept. 4, 1879 she joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and at the time of her death, her membership was with this church at Viola, near Pattersville.  She married MR. MUFFETT July 15, 1884.... She leaves her husband and two children the youngest but 6 months old.. She was buried on the 18th in the Overton cem.

UNCLE ANDY MILLER died at his home two miles below town last Thursday night.   Mr. Miller was recognized throughout  his long and useful life as a man of sterling integrity against whom the tongue of slander failed to find a point of attack. ED ROWE’S letter to his aunt in the state of OREGON.

Centertown, Ohio CO. KY. DEC 9, 1886

 I received the letter you addressed to the post master of Hartford. I am the only one of my father’s first set of children now living. My step-mother, your sister had 5 children four daughters and one son, two are living and the son lives on the old homestead with him a half mile of me.  He was named after your father and his post office the same as mine.  Your sister Polly died at this house in July 1884 age 82 years.... I am now 77 years old and my half brother Wm L is 52 years old.  Your brother Jacob lived to be a very old man in Muhlenberg County.  Uncle David Imbler paid us a visit ten years ago.  Uncle Sam, now lives in Kansas and my half brother corresponds with him. Uncles John, Daniel and Abraham are dead.   Harrison D. Taylor who married FANNIE DAVIS, now lives in HARTFORD one of the oldest and honored citizens of Oho County, his wife has been dead several years.   John H. McHenry, who married Hannah Davis is dead and his son Henry D. McHenry is one of the most prominent citizens of the State and is favorably spoken of as the next UNITED STATES SENATOR FROM KENTUCKY.

 We have a railroad running through Ohio county and crossing Green river at Benton’s ferry and running through the Isaac Davis farm and by Greenville.

I have paid our county paper to be sent to your address for one year wish you to write me when you receive the first copy.

13 DECEMBER 1886   PROF. CICERO M. CUNDIFF DIED of typhoid fever... Principal AT THE SCHOOL. BURIED    MASONVILLE, DAVIESS CO. KY.

15 DECEMBER   IRA , son  and only child of  ELVIS STEVENS of LIBERTY fell from a fence and his face was pierced by a stick.  from the wound erysipelas set up and his no now lying at the point of death...  He died on the 15th.

the Widow Mahaley BURGER of  ADAHBUGH , died last Saturday at 2 o’clock.

W. T. MADDOX, who had moved to WINFIELD, KANSAS three years ago from this county, while at Uniontown on his way back to his old home, died very suddenly.  The remains were brought to the old family burying ground for interment.

MR. J. M. TAYLOR of  CENTRAL CITY, formerly of this place leaves today for HALL’S TENN. where he will be married on December 26th to Miss Lula Shoffner, daughter of MR. M. L. SHOFFNER a well known lumber man.  After the wedding MR. MRS. TAYLOR  will visit the parents of former at ROSINE, KY.

JOHN LONEY, of JAMESPORT, MO is visiting L. P. and L. B. LONEY of  McHENRY... he was a former citizen of Ohio co.   He moved Missouri about 7 years ago.  is a successful western farmer.

B. M. BENNETT of BEDA  will leave for his new home in CHRISTIAN CO. on the 28th... he has lived in this community since 1853... and was postmaster of Beda 30 years...
