MRS. SALLIE A. HIGGS, of  BROWN’S VALLEY died on the 24th, and buried in the GREEN BRIAR CHURCH CEM.  She was but a few months of  100 years of age.  Her youngest son, SAM HIGGS is 60 years of age and still living.

CICERO KING died at the home of his father, near BUFORD on the 26th of  consumption.  He was released from Eddyville Penitentiary on parole sometime in December, where he had been confined for the past four years.  He was sentenced to ten years in prison for the murder of Sam Casebier  which occurred here at Hartford on Christmas eve 1898.

FEBRUARY 19, 1904 FRIDAY

MRS. SUSAN L. TAYLOR died on FEBRUARY 10, 1904.  Nothing from my pen could add anything to her many excellent qualities of head and heat, for that in her death earth has lost a Christian and heaven has gained a saint there can be no doubt.  Mr. Lincoln said to Carpenter, the artist , “paint me just as I am”  I am sure if the deceased had her wishes  been consulted would have asked nothing more.  In early life she professed faith in Christ and became a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, where she lived a consistent member until her death.  On December 7, 1865 she was married to L. L. TAYLOR, now deceased, to this woman four children were born;  Annie M,  Ulysses (now deceased) Clydius W. and Mary J. survive her.  She lived to see her children grown and settled comfortably in life and her work seemed to have been done.

  It was the good fortune of this writer to find a home in her family at that age when boys are so easily led astray.  Orphaned in infancy we never had the advantages of counsel and advice from father and mother.  So essential to the development of Christian character and in this home and this good woman we found both, if we have accomplished anything for good in this life it has been in a long measure due to encouragement and kindness received at the hands of this good woman. Surely this scripture is fulfilled in her, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, yea from henceforth, for they rest from their labors and their works do follow them.  Doubly blessed are all children who have such a mother.  What more could be said of her, She was a Christian woman.

FEBUARY 26, 1904 FRIDAY

  At his home in Rockport, Ky, Rev. D. J. K. MADDOX, died on the 21st in his 68th year of age.  In early age he married SALLE A. TICHENOR, who answered death’s call only a few years ago.  On the 27th of last November, he married to Mrs. Lou Tichenor, who with eleven children and a host of friends mourn his death.

  Rev. Maddox has seen forty-five years of active service in the ministry, during which time he preached for many of the Baptist congregations in this and adjoining counties.  He was chosen Moderator of the Gasper River Association a number of times and served in that capacity for several years.    It may be said that a truly good and much adored individual has entered into the rest to the faithful of God.

WASHINGTON, D.C. FEB 23rd.... THE UNITED STATES SENATE today ratified without amendment the treaty with PANAMA for a canal across the Isthmus of Panama by a vote of  66 to 14.

HERBERT, KY.....  MR. JAMES SKINNER died at his home near Patesville on the 22nd of consumption.  He leaves his wife and five children .  He was buried in the Panther Creek cem.

DR. ALFRED YOUNG,  an honored and respected citizen, died at his home near HOLSTON on the 21st.

MRS. MARGARET SMITH, wife of  SAMUEL SMITH, died at her home near HARTFORD, on FEBRUARY 12th.  She was 59 years of age; she died of measles and pneumonia.  She leaves her husband and one son and a host of friends to mourn her loss.   A good neighbor, a dutiful wife and loving mother has gone to the beautiful beyond.  It seemed as if sunshine was always in her path, when the trials and care of life were to encounter, there was never a murmur or frown.  She was always  cheerful and good, and she will be greatly missed by all, especially the aged husband and son.  They should be reconciled to God’s will and prepare to meet her in heaven, where parting is not known.

REV. FRED JONES of DRAKESBORO was called to Render on the 19th to preach the funeral of MRS. JOHN FRANCIS, who passed from this life on the 10th to wait the judgment day.  She was a devoted Christian and was a member of the church for about forty years.  She is about 65 years old.  She leaves behind her husband and five sons and one daughter, all of them married, and a large circle of friends to mourn her.

LOUISVILLE, KY.,  MARCH 2.... JUDGE GEROGE DuRELLE and HON. JOHN J. McHENRY have formed a partnership.  Mr. McHenry is the son of  the late HENRY D. McHENRY, and one of OHIO CO.’S most worthy sons.

MRS. AMAND WILSON died at her home near Horton on the 2nd of pneumonia and was buried in the MILTON TAYLOR CEM.

The two year old child of  MR. MRS  R. C. TAYLOR died of pneumonia on the 1st and was buried in WALTON’S CREEK CEM.

KIT THOMAS, age 83 years,  hung himself  on the farm of his daughter in CROMWELL,  on the 8th.  He had left his second wife some time back, due to problems.

MR. HAYDEN WEBB and  MISS MYRTLE MORELAND plan to marry on MARCH 23TH at NORTH CREEK CHURCH.  MR. WEBB is of OHIO CO. and MISS MORELAND is the daughter of  DAVID MORELAND of  Ohio Co.

BENJAMIN ARNOLD, age 55, who moved from JEFFERSON CO., KY, 30 years ago, to MOSEYVILLE, DAVIESS CO., KY on the 16th took a rifle and shot himself to death.  He leaves his wife and nine children, six of which were living at home at the time.

OLLIE BEATTIE, the well known photographer of FORDSVILLE, was convicted of printing and spending his own money and has been sentenced to 5 years in the Fed. Pent.

DR. JAMES W. MEADOR, was born in BRECKINRIDGE CO., KY on NOVEMBER 8, 1838, where he spent his childhood and early manhood.  He chose to be a DOCTOR and graduated from the UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE in 1869, after which he located in SHREVE in OHIO CO., KY.  He died on JANUARY 13, 1904 and leaves  his wife to mourn him.  He was buried in the PLEASANT GROVE CEM.

BROWN of this place. She leaves her husband and five children, plus a sister, MRS. EATON, and brother, MR. JAS. BROWN, a merchant here.  She will be buried in the EATON CEM.

C. M. BARNETT, of HARTFORD, Surveyor of the port of LOUISVILLE, has received a notification that a reunion of the Barnett family will be held in ST. LOUIS on SEPTEMBER 16TH, which he and his family are invited to attend.  He will defer his contemplated visit to the World’s Fair until that time.

The Barnett family is a very large one and has connections in all parts of the United States.  Great interest in the reunion has been caused among its members and is probable that the event will be attended by 1,500 to 2,000 people.  The Barnett’s are numerous in England and the first to come to this country were two brothers, JOHN and JOSEPH, to whom were granted by the King of England a tract of land, upon which they settled and became wealthy planters.  This was perhaps twenty-five years before the Revolution and the American branch of the Barnett family multiplied rapidly.

In 1780, three of them left Virginia and came to Kentucky; one Alexander, the great-grandfather of the present generation of Barnett’s settled at HARTFORD, which town was named for him, being called Barnett’s station in the early years of it’s existence.  The other two settled at the headwaters of the Green River and on Silver Creek in Madison County.  In this state the family has about five hundred members.  In Louisville an entire page of the city directory is given to them.

CROMWELL, KY.  Fire broke on the 11th out in the hardware store of  J. H. HUDSON, and it spread very fast to consume the following building.... The Hudson store, The T. C. AFTERMATH OF CROMWELL FIRE;

Jas A. HUDSON was brought over to HARTFORD from Cromwell on the 15th and taken before JUDGE MILLER on a charge of lunacy.  A jury was empanelled but dismissed, and Hudson was placed under arrest on  warrant  sworn out by Edgar Gillstrap charging him with arson.   The Cromwell fire had its origin in Hudson’s store and it is reported that GILSTRAP went to Hudson on the 14th and demanded pay for his loss in the fire, threatening Hudson with arrest for setting fire to the town.  Hudson then took red precipitate with suicidal intent, but it only made him very sick.

  At the preliminary hearing his trial was set for June 25th and his bond was placed at $300.00, which he gave by depositing the money with the court. 

Yesterday evening Hudson was reported very much worse from the effect of the red precipitate, and is not expected to live.

HENRY CLAY LEACH died very suddenly of heart disease at 9 o’clock  Wednesday morning at his home in Beaver Dam.  He was buried on the 15th at Mt. Zion Cem.   He was a Federal soldier during the Civil War, and Postmaster at Beaver Dam during the McKINLEY FIRST ADMINISTRATION.  He leaves his wife and several children to mourn him.

ELISHA MILTON MILES was born in what is now known as the Frank Mitchell farm near Fordsville, Ky.  December 11, 1839, and was the eldest son of  JOHN S. and AMANDA MILES , formerly of  Shelby Co. Ky. 

I have not been able to learn anything in regard to the early history of John Miles except that he came to Ohio Co. from Shelby Co. and it was in the latter county that he married Miss Ford.  The exact date that he came to Ohio County is unknown, but it is supposed to be in the year 1834.  He was for many years a member of old Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, and for some years he was moderator of that church.  He died October 21, 1883 and his wife died some years before.  Elisha Miles lived on a farm near Fordsville with his father till the year 1857, when he went to Cloverport, Ky., to learn the trade of a tailor with William Witt, who was married to a sister of Elisha’s mother.  Young Miles remained with his uncle till the year 1860, when the troubled forbearance of the Civil War so paralyzed all business pursuits that he returned to the farm near Fordsville, where he remained till October 15, 1861, when he enlisted in Co. K, 17th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, and after a service of 39 months he was honorably discharged a private of Co. B. of the 17th, Ky oat Louisville, Ky. January 23, 1865, by reason of expiration of term of service.

  During the Georgia Campaign in the battles near Cassville, Ga. May 19/22 , 1864 he received a gun-shot wound in the left hand, which made a cripple of him for life and on his return from the army, as this wound deprived him from working at his trade, he engaged in agricultural pursuits on his father’s farm. April 8, 1869 he married MISS JOSEPHINE E. SMITH, daughter of the late HENRY SMITH, a prominent early settler of the Fordsville area.  Mrs. Miles is a twin sister of N. B. SMITH now (May 1904) living near Fordsville he was named in honor of  NAPOLEON BONAPARTE, the great Republican Emperor of France, and his twin sister after the Empress Josephine, first wife of Napoleon.

  In December 1882, a Grand Army Post was recruited at Fordsville and when it was duly mustered, January 6, 1883,  Elisha M. Miles was one of its charter members and during his long membership in the order he was in good standing and served much of that time as an officer of the post, or a committeeman on some business pertaining to the Grand Army.  Comrade Miles died of consumption on the 17th of March 1898, after a lingering illness of many months.  His funeral sermon was preached by Rev. B. T. Jenkins, a Sergeant of the 17th. Ky. , and former pastor of the Baptist Church at Fordsville, where brother Miles and many of his relatives were members for years.  He was buried by his Grand Army comrades with his deceased relatives in the JOSIAH HAYNES graveyard on  his farm, and with UNITED STATES GOVERMENT furnished a military headstone to mark his grave.  Comrade Miles is survived by his wife and six children, 3 sons and 3 daughters.  2 sons and 2 daughters are also grown and married.  His youngest son is 12 years old and his youngest daughter is 8 years old.

OWENSBORO, KY:  JAMES COOMES of WEBSTER CO., KY, aged about 26 years, was found to have been killed at the fair grounds on  July 31. He had come to visit relations in the area. The death is being looked into.  A wooden stake had been driven thru his neck and then nailed to a post.

NOTE; In the AUG. 19th issue of this paper,  it is learned that James Coomes was the son of  L. B. COOMES of  MADISONVILLE, KY.  On learning of the manner of the death of his son,  he went insane and was sent to the hospital in Hopkinsville, Ky.  He is the father of 12.

MRS. DICY LOTT, the mother of  24 children, died last week at her home in SEMIWAY, DAVIESS CO., KY  at the age of 84 years.  Six of her children are still living as well as her husband.  Of the twenty-four children, two were twins who died in infancy, four were born at the same time, but lived but a short time, twelve of the others died at an early age.  She was the wife of  EPHRAHAM LOTT.  Her maiden name was  SKITO and was born  in  McLEAN CO.

OWENSBORO......   WILLIAM HOLBACK and HARVEY ALLEN were killed by a train, four miles west of the city.  Holback and Allen both lived in the HARBER MINES, Holback was the owner of the mine, and Allen was the son of  Henry Allen and worked in the office at the mine. Holback was 20 years old and Allen was 22.  It appears that they had been drinking and had fallen asleep with their heads on the track.

Porter, a well known timber dealer, of Morgantown, died from the effects of an overdose of morphine at the home of Joe Sanderfur, of the Sanderfur’s Crossing neighborhood, about 2 o’clock Monday afternoon.  Porter came to Hartford Saturday to look at a body of timber near Hartford and spent the night with Mr. Sanderfur, occupying a room with another man, who noticed that he took two doses of some powder during the night.  Sunday morning when Mr. Sanderfur went to call him for breakfast he could not be aroused, and it soon became evident that he was suffering from the effects of an opiate and physicians were called.  Constant effort was made to restore him to consciousness but proved futile.   Porter formerly lived in Cromwell and is well known throughout the country.  He moved to Morgantown about three years ago.  When a young man Porter drank heavily, but several years ago gave it up.  It was said that he gradually fell into habit of using morphine and that for some time past he had been practically a morphine fiend.

The deceased is survived by a widow and four children.  His wife was telephoned and reached Sanderfur’s before Mr. Porter died.

REV. E. M. CROWE was 75 years old last Friday and a few of his old friends gathered at his residence to help him celebrate the day with a birthday dinner.  We submit a few short sketches of those who were present.

Bro. Crowe was born in ALLEN CO. KY. on October 15, 1829. His family on the paternal side were Scotch, Irish and English. On the maternal side pure Scotch.  His parents like himself were Methodists.  He has been a member of the church 62 years and a minister of the gospel 49 years.

Rev. GABRIEL JACKSON BEAN, an octogenarian who has probably conducted more funerals and married more couples than any body else in Ohio County, was also present, cheery and happy as a baby.  Bro. Bean was born September 6, 1823.  He was converted to Christ January 20, 1844 and joined the Methodist Church the next day.  He was married October 17, 1845.  Was licensed to preach in the fall of 1861.

Mr. Jesse Potter, another guest, was born in Shelby County, Ky. January 24, 1829.  He was English parentage.  He has been a Methodist 38 years.

Mr. Louis Gunther was born July 14, 1832 in the town of LAUDAU, RHINE BAVARIA, GERMANY.  He was of  Catholic parentage.  He was Christened at birth and confirmed at the age of twelve years.  He came to America in 1847 and made this his home for forty years.  He joined the Masonic fraternity in 1862.

Dr. J. S. MORTON was born MAY 24, 1828.  His parents were of English descent.  Together with himself they were never allied to any church, although firm believers in the Bible and it’s teaching.  This worthy son of Esculaplus exhibited in a great measure the noble impulses of an exalted humanity by raising a very nice purse of money which he presented to Bro. Crowe and wife as a memento of the occasion and for which the old folks return most sincere thanks.

Mr. R. M. WALKER was born NELSON COUNTY, NOVEMBER 1, 1825.  He was the son of Richard and Sallie Basey Walker, who were of Scotch and French decent respectively.

J. S. VAUGHT was born MAY 1, 1829 in MUHLENBERG COUNTY.  He professed religion at the age of 18 and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which he has been a member ever since.  He was ordained elder in 1850.

Two other old gentlemen who were invited, MESSRS. W.B. RENDER and Wm FOREMAN, were unable  to attend.  Their absence was noted as their presence would have added much to the enjoyment of this occasion.

An electric light plant is being built for the city of HARTFORD, to supply power for 800 lights which will be given out to companies and homes in the city.

HERBERT MILLER, son of REB. JOSHUA MILLER of HOPEWELL neighborhood, was run down and killed  by a train near Evansville on the 18th.  Young Miller and HARRY WOODBURN of ROCKPORT were on their way to LINTON, IND and were riding on the freight train between two box-cars.  The coupling broke where they were standing and the cars came apart, sending Miller dropping to the track - then the car ran over him.  His remains were brought home on the 19th for burier.

BRECKENRIDGE COUNTY;  On the 1st a fire burned the home of  LETCHER BROWN, near SAMPLE, in which two children were burned to death and his wife is burned so bad that she is not expected to live. The two children were put into one casket and buried at the SAMPLE CEM.  Their five year old son, who was at home at the time, was able to get out of the house; the two older children were at school.  The dead children were the 3 year old son and 2 month old infant.

Mrs. James ROBERTS of FORDSVILLE, age 15, who was married in September, committed suicide by taking strychnine on the 18th.  She was the daughter of Fred Boorman,  a miner; her husband is the son of SAM ROBERTS, proprietor of a livery stable.  At the time of their marriage the groom was 18 and the bride barely 15.  They had lived with the grooms parents.
